Custom-Built Solutions: Case Studies
Dara VC10 Installation – Total Quality in Unprecedented Timescales One of our most prestigious and challenging projects to date involved the design, manufacture and installation of VC10 aircraft stagings and platforms on behalf of Dara at RAF St Athan. From contract award in early November 2005 the installation was substantially completed by the end of December with follow up works being completed including an additional walkway assembly in the early part of 2006. T.B. Davies (UK) Limited received plaudits from both the end users and programme managers alike. The user friendly, low maintenance and yet inherently stable stagings and platforms provided Dara with a best value solution for their maintenance needs. The extremely stringent timescales represented a huge challenge to the T.B. Davies (UK) team who responded to the department’s needs and ultimately received the formal thanks of the head of fixed wing.
The unique, purpose designed walkway provides Dara with a 9,000kg SWL area for stripping components and hardware out of the aircraft interior.

Fuselage door access step. Cost Effective Compliance Across the UK T.B. Davies is now becoming a familiar site in most major UK Airports with the recent successful completion of a nationwide supply contract for an adjustable height work platform. The work stands are used during aircraft turn-around for minor maintenance. The design is based on a well known proven system with essential design enhancements such as an aluminium flip over step to minimise the risk of operator manual handling injury. It also boasts a unique system of fold up aluminium handrails that utilise specially designed pockets as opposed to pins to minimise the risk of FOD and greatly improve operator efficiency whilst at all times ensuring personnel are not at risk of fall in contravention of HSE regulations.
These stands have already been described by the users as “the best on the ramp” and are now in service throughout the UK. Currently being used at Gatwick, Stansted, Luton, Bristol, East Midlands, Liverpool, Newcastle, Manchester, Glasgow, Edinburgh. and Belfast airports. Now a familiar site in the Welsh Capital, the National Assembly for Wales building in Cardiff required a specialist system to act as a permanent means of access to the winch dome at the very top of the building. T.B Davies (UK) Ltd. were able to design, manufacture and install this system in very stringent timescales during the chaotic final period of works. Our highly experienced team were able to ensure no undue delays were experienced by the client in handover of this prestigious project.
