Senedd Roof Access Ladder

Welsh Senedd Parliament Building Roof Access System

The Senedd building is located in the former docks area of Cardiff, and was designed by the Pritzker Prize-winning architect Richard Rogers. It was designed to be sustainable using minimal energy consumption and waste, and incorporate renewable technologies.

Working closely with primary contractor Taylor Woodrow the team at TBDUK were commissioned to provide safe access to the roof cowl and lantern structure. The cowl allows hot air to be exhausted as required and the lantern allows natural daylight into the debating chamber. The roof cowl is designed to rotate with changes in wind direction. This produces a negative pressure on the leeward side of the cowl that allows warm air to be drawn out of the building.

TBDUK had to ensure that maintenance engineers could safely work on the cowl whilst minimising both the aesthetic impact and make certain the access system did not interfere with the individual ventilation operating areas. The design incorporates man guard hoops to reduce the risk of a fall and provide a confident point of entry from within the edge protection system.
